Prayer and Discipleship

A personal prayer habit is vitally important in the life of a disciple maker.  Not only does it remind us of our dependence upon God for sanctification, but we must also model healthy prayer disciplines in our discipleship of others. We learn how to pray by praying. Download Handout – PD 07 – Prayer and Discipleship Reasons We Fail to Pray Lack of Faith – We are doers by default.  Relying on a God we cannot see with requests we…

Scripture Memory and Discipleship

While reading Scripture is vitally important, oftentimes, we forget what we have read as soon as we have closed our Bibles.  The lost of art of meditating and memorizing Scripture is a key discipline in the life of the disciple. We must discipline our minds to have the words of the Bible accessible even when a copy of the Bible is not available. Bible Study and Discipleship

A key component in personal discipleship is the practice of spiritual disciplines.  Spiritual disciplines are not meant to make you more liked by Jesus but more like Jesus.  We discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness (1 Tim. 4:7). No discipline is more important than regular Bible study because it encourages every other spiritual discipline. Why Reading the Entire Bible Is Important

for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.  -Acts 20:27 In Paul’s farewell speech to his beloved family in Ephesus, he makes a startling and yet glorious statement.  In his 3 years in that city (Acts 20:31), he taught them the complete counsel of God.  He wanted to make sure that they understood the entirety of God’s truth.  He didn’t neglect the hard portions of Scripture.  He taught them all. How is your grasp…

Discipleship in the Old Testament

While the word, “discipleship,” is not found in the Old Testament, the concept is embedded from the very beginning.  God’s people were to pass on a legacy of faith to the following generations. Download Handout – PD 03 – Discipleship in the Old Testament Old Testament Principles The relational God created relational beings (Gen. 1:28). While Mankind’s relationship with God was to have priority, all horizontal relationships were intended to serve as a helper to the vertical relationship (Gen. 2:18). While…

Time Management and Personal Discipleship

We talk about making disciples, but do we make the time to do it?  In this series of lessons, we must address time management as it relates to personal discipleship. Download Handout – PD 02 – Time Management and Personal Discipleship The Best Use of the Time Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the…

Staff Responsibilities

Rocky Creek is blessed with an incredible staff. In the section below, you can read a summarized version of our staff’s ministry responsibilities.  While the main responsibilities of each…

Defining Discipleship

We talk about making disciples, but do we know how to do it?  In this series of lessons on Personal Discipleship, let’s pray that we start obeying the biblical mandate regarding discipleship. Before we can make a disciple, we need to figure out what one looks like. Download Handout – PD 01 – Defining Discipleship What Is a Disciple? Definition In its simplest form, “disciple” means “learner.” “Disciple” was not a unique spiritual term during Jesus’ day.  It was used to…

Peace on Earth – December Series

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… But for many of us, it feels to be the most stressful time of the year.  If Jesus’ coming promised peace, why do we lack it so much?  Where is this peace that was promised? During the month of December, we will walk through a series entitled, “Peace on Earth.”  Join us in worship on Sundays at 9 or 10:30 AM.
