Preparing a Church Budget

Our church leadership is currently walking through the budget preparation time.  Since there are many new folks around here, I wanted you to know our mindset as we prepare the budget for the upcoming year.  Before you receive it, a substantial amount of time and a significant amount of people have prayed, talked, and worked hard to prepare it.  So, this post is a way to allow you to understand the process. While there are many logistical tasks to be…

October Serve Month – – UPDATED

October is Serve Month at Rocky Creek. The list has been updated again, past events have been removed.  After you sign up, you will receive more details about that particular event. Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5 The disciples were obedient to Jesus command to put their net out, even though they were experienced fishermen.  God blessed them tremendously through their…

Three Churches In One

Strengthening Churches “What a beautiful historic church!” That may be the first comment of a visitor to Charleston who sees Citadel Square Baptist Church. In 1854 the members of First Baptist Church saw the need for a church out on the edge of the city and planted Citadel Square on Meeting Street. No longer on the “edge” but in the heart of Charleston, the church has had a vital ministry for more than 160 years. Pastor David Walker leads this…

Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Fires… Broken Homes and Broken Lives

Disaster Relief / RebuildSC Earlier this summer, Rocky Creek sent a small team of four men to Nichols, SC to work at Nichols Baptist Church, which had been damaged by flooding in October 2016.  Nearly all of the 261 homes in the town were left uninhabitable.  Our team helped the church repair it’s sanctuary and soon the church will be hosting teams that come to work on houses in the area. With Hurricane Harvey having just blasted Texas and Louisiana,…

What Good Is A Dying Church Anyway?

STARTING: REPLANTING A CHURCH What happens when a church’s membership becomes too small? The people want to do great things for the Lord, but not enough money or hands are available to accomplish those worthy goals. This was the dilemma for Oak Grove Church in Spartanburg in 2015. They were down to 40 members, most of whom were senior adults. Finding themselves without a pastor, they called church planting strategist James Nugent to serve as interim. Not far away, Hub…

Changing Lives Through Baptist Collegiate Ministries

Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) across South Carolina saw a collective 337 students give their lives to Christ during this past school year. According to Collegiate Ministry Group Director Ken Owens, of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, these 17 ministries (17 different campus BCM groups) have been intentional in their focus on evangelism and outreach; and they are seeing tremendous campus response. “We are being intentional to share the hope of the gospel with every life on…

Tackling Poverty by Helping Children Read

SHARING: HEART4SCHOOLS Homelessness, poverty, imprisonment: these are big issues that affect people in South Carolina. How can these be eliminated? These big problems are often the result of a lack of education. If a child cannot read, he is at-risk to become a statistic as an adult. Research has shown, however, that getting a child on reading level by third grade is often an indication of success. South Carolina Baptist churches are reaching out to schools in their communities to…

Church Planting in the Upstate

Reconcile Community Church reaching into West Greenville, SC Several years ago the North American Mission Board decided to channel its funds for church planting into several of the most spiritually lost areas where there were decidedly too few churches to be able to make an impact.  These are called SEND Cities, and Rocky Creek is currently participating with two SEND City Church Plants in the Boston, Massachusetts area. However, here in South Carolina, even though there are many churches around,…

A Swahili Language Church In Spartanburg, SC

SENDING: REACHING THE NATIONS IN SOUTH CAROLINA When Charles Kenya left his home in Kenya to come to Iowa in 2001 on a mission trip, he had no idea of the great plans that God had for his future.  In 2002 the Kenya family moved to South Carolina.  In May 2016, discussions began about the growing number of Swahili-speaking refugees who needed a church in the area. Over a period of just a few months the Neema Kiswahili Baptist Church…

Praying for SC State Missionaries and the Janie Chapman Offering

Your Gifts for Janie Chapman In Colossians 4:2-4, Paul is concluding his letter to the church at Colossae. Written from Rome where he is imprisoned, he encourages steadfast prayer, sharing the gospel, and proclaiming Jesus Christ. Just as the Colossians received direction from Paul’s words, so are his words a challenge for South Carolina Baptists today as we pray for our state, proclaim the gospel to the lost, and permeate our state with opportunities to know God’s love. Continue steadfastly…

Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Efforts After making multiple landfalls in Texas, and now in Louisiana, Hurricane Harvey may become the most costly national disaster in the US history.  As of Monday morning the hurricane has already dropped 11 trillion gallons of rain over South Texas.  More than 300,000 customers are without power, 62 counties are already designated as disaster areas from the 132 mph wind gusts and the enormous amounts of rain (over 4 feet of rain in many locations).…
