What is the Gospel Project?

The Gospel Project is a curriculum for preschoolers, children, students, and adults that is published by LifeWay.  It is “a Christ-centered, chronological study that will take [you] on a journey through the storyline of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation.  Along the way, [you] will discover the big picture of what God has been doing throughout redemptive history, and what it means for [you].” Each week we’ll investigate a passage of Scripture and discover how it points to Jesus.  We’ll also…

Basketball and the Gospel Project

I started playing basketball in elementary school, and I still enjoy playing today, although it is at a much slower pace.  However, for me to play basketball, my body has to work together to accomplish this goal.  First, my mind says that today is a good day to go to the gym and play,  Once I arrive, my legs take me onto the court.  Then, I use my hands to catch the ball, and I use my eyes to look at the basket. …

College Groups

Statistics say that many students who have grown up in the church decide to drop out once they get to college.  For whatever reason, for these students, being connected to a Bible study group and attending worship services are not high on their priority list.  However, at Rocky Creek we want college students to be an active, integral part of our church family. Therefore, we have two morning worship services (9:00am and 10:30am) and two opportunities for college age students to be…

Pray a Psalm a Day

My attempt to discipline myself for the purpose of godliness (1 Tim. 4:7) has changed throughout the years, but these days, I have 3 spiritual disciplines I attempt to engage in everyday. One of those 3 disciplines is that I pray through one psalm everyday.  It’s a practice I shared about in the sermon “This Is the House That God Built.”  I have been super encouraged already with the number of people who jumped into the process this morning.  Here’s…

Psalm 84 – July 2

Read the passages this week and think about these questions Psalm 84 Psalm 42   How are you demonstrating a longing for God and His truth? What is different about the God of the Bible as compared to false gods? (84:2) How is God described in Psalm 84? Why can we have confidence in God? Who are the blessed (happy) people? Are you blessed today? Do you desire God’s presence more than anything else? Are you trusting in God today…

How to Share Your Testimony

People can resort to arguments, but they can’t argue with results. In our efforts to grow in the gospel, we must learn how to share our testimony of how we came to faith in Christ.  There are many arguments out there regarding the validity of the Bible or the skepticism concerning a God you cannot see, but most people respect personal stories.  We live in a time when people are very defensive regarding what they believe, but a good majority…

Equip [Collegiate and Seminary Credit at Rocky Creek]

“And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). As a local church, we are charged with running our leg of the race in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20).  In our commitment to making disciples, we are entrusting doctrines and disciplines to others with the goal of spiritual multiplication.  Our spiritual maturity will not be marked with how much we…

Jesus Is the Greater David [Sermon Clip]

Taken from the sermon, “There’s Always Somebody Taller.” As you study the Old Testament, you begin to see the foreshadowing of Christ.  Typological characters and events fill the pages.  While these events are important in and of themselves, they are a shadow of something greater to come.  In studying the life of David, you begin to realize something very important. Jesus is the greater David who defeated the greater giant. Jesus is the greater son of Bethlehem – born into…

Psalm 138 – June 25

Read the passages this week and think about these questions Psalm 138 Philippians 1:6; 2:9-11 Psalm 136   What is David’s response to God? Why does David give thanks and sing praises? What can you give thanks and praise for? How has God shown you His lovingkindness and truth? How has God answered your prayers? Why can David walk in confidence? How is God accomplishing His purpose in your life?

Psalm 23 – June 18

Read the passages this week and think about these questions Psalm 23 1 Samuel 17:1-58 John 10:1-18   How did David’s experience as a shepherd help him relate to God? What did David learn about God from his being a shepherd? What does this Psalm teach us about God?     Can you give a one word description of God or what He does for us for each phrase/sentence in Psalm 23? Does Psalm 23:6 describe the desire of your life? Because…

Psalm 78 – June 11

Read the passages this week and think about these questions Psalm 78 Exodus 7-20   What stories from the Bible or your own life help you understand God’s strength and His wondrous works? Are you reminding yourself of God’s goodness by reading His Word? Why should we tell and teach others (next generation) the greatness of God? Who have you told about God’s greatness and wonderful works? Do you forget God’s blessings and rebel against His ways? How did God…

Gospel Intentionality

If you want a church to grow biblically, you must focus on evangelism.  Much of what happens in churches can be attributed to transfer growth vs. conversion growth.  Evangelism can catch fire in a church when everyone assumes the responsibility to grow in the gospel. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen [2 Pet. 3:18]. Evangelism must be out…

Are Cell Phones Changing Us?

“Students are always on their cell phones.” As a student pastor I hear that comment all the time. As I was reading about cell phone use in culture, I came across this article by Tony Reinke of Desiring God Ministries. He gives us six ways that our cell phones are changing us. I found it interesting and insightful. Click the link to read the article: http://www.desiringgod.org/articles/six-ways-your-phone-is-changing-you

Psalm 1 – June 4

Read the passages this week and think about these questions Psalm 1 Deuteronomy 30:19-20 Matthew 7:13-14, 24-27 John 18:15-27 Luke 22:54-62   What two types of people are described? What two paths are available?  Which path are you on? What does a blessed/godly man “not” do?  How was Peter an example of this digression from following Jesus? What does a blessed/godly man do?  How much time do you spend per day or per week reading God’s Word?  Is this something you enjoy doing? What…

Overview of Psalms

During the months of June, July, and August we will be looking at thirteen different psalms during Bible study.  The Book of Psalms, which means “hymns of praise”, uses music, prayers, and poetry to give us insight into the greatness of God.  The one hundred fifty psalms are broken down into five books: book 1 (1-41 with 1-2 as an introduction), book 2 (42-72), book 3 (73-89), book 4 (90-106), book 5 (107-150 with 146-150 as a conclusion).  They are written by…
