Meet the Rocky Creek Resident and the Interns

Rocky Creek is a church committed to making disciples who make disciples. That’s why we have established the Entrust initiative that provides college students, seminary students, and those desiring the opportunity to be entrusted with meaningful ministry experiences within a local church. We welcome our first group of participants to our Rocky Creek ministry team: Bryce Staggs – Pastoral Resident Bryce is excited to be serving as a pastoral resident at Rocky Creek under Travis’ supervision. Why Reading the Entire Bible Is Important

for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.  -Acts 20:27 In Paul’s farewell speech to his beloved family in Ephesus, he makes a startling and yet glorious statement.  In his 3 years in that city (Acts 20:31), he taught them the complete counsel of God.  He wanted to make sure that they understood the entirety of God’s truth.  He didn’t neglect the hard portions of Scripture.  He taught them all. How is your grasp…

Discipleship in the New Testament

The writers of the New Testament show an importance in discipleship using the word “disciple” over 260 times and the word “Christian” only 3 times. We echo that discipleship is important, but do we know why it’s important, what we should teach, or how to do it? Download Handout – PD 04- Discipleship in the NT The Why “Christianity without the living Christ is inevitably Christianity without discipleship, and Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer Discipleship…

Discipleship in the Old Testament

While the word, “discipleship,” is not found in the Old Testament, the concept is embedded from the very beginning.  God’s people were to pass on a legacy of faith to the following generations. Download Handout – PD 03 – Discipleship in the Old Testament Old Testament Principles The relational God created relational beings (Gen. 1:28). While Mankind’s relationship with God was to have priority, all horizontal relationships were intended to serve as a helper to the vertical relationship (Gen. 2:18). While…

Reaching The Z’s (part 4 of 4)

REACHING THE Z’S ( Tips on Reaching them) Jim Burns from HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific university has some advice and ideas for us. Understand Them: As Burns notes, you can’t reach the Z’s unless you understand them and their world. He takes his cue from Paul in Acts 17:22-31, addressing the Greeks at Mars Hill. “He talked to them in their language,” says Burns. “We have to do the same with Generation Z. We’ve got to…

The Generation Z (part 3 of 4)

6-10 TRAITS OF Z NATION      What do we need to know about the kids in Generation Z?   They’re pretty independent.Gen Xers, repeatedly warned about “helicopter parenting,” have reacted by giving their kids—Z’s—plenty of space. This hands-off parenting has yielded both pros and cons. They’re aware of a troubled planet. Most Z’s have grown up since 9/11 and have only known a world where terrorist attacks are the norm. Additionally, they’ve lived through the Great Recession, and they’ve seen their parents,…

January Parenting Principle #1

January Parenting Principle    Principle #1: Nothing is more important in your life than being one of God’s tools to form a human soul. Many books and articles have been written about the subject of parenting. In fact, there are whole sections in bookstores focused solely on that topic.  Biblical parenting is much more than a topic, book, tips, and even strategies. We use those things to help us, but its more than that. Biblical parenting is a calling. God…

By 2020, The Washington Postsays, Z’s will have about $3 trillion in purchasing power. They’ve always been wired. They’ve never known a world without…

Upward Basketball and Cheer News

The latest Upward Basketball and Cheer season has already begun, and we have 279 children in grades K5 through 6th participating. This gives us an excellent opportunity to teach the gospel, not only to the children, but also their family and friends that come to see them play and cheer. The Apostle Paul said this in 1 Corinthians 3: “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” The Upward ministry gives us the opportunity to both plant and…

The Generation Z (part 1 of 4)

The Z’s….. It’s not a Sleeping Giant. Who are the Z’s and how can the church reach this distracted generation? Each new generation of people gains a new name and exhibits certain characteristics. For instance, the Baby-Boomer generation is named after the group of people who was born between 1946-1964. They received this name because birth rates spiked after WWII, therefore their generation was deemed that title by sociologists. They also have certain characteristics that represent them, though not everyone…

Time Management and Personal Discipleship

We talk about making disciples, but do we make the time to do it?  In this series of lessons, we must address time management as it relates to personal discipleship. The bands will be leading our morning worship services. This is an excellent opportunity for us to invest in the next generation of Worship Leaders. Staff Responsibilities

Rocky Creek is blessed with an incredible staff. I am daily encouraged by this team’s integrity, godliness, and diligence as they serve this church family.  In recent months, we have spent some time together studying how each of us is gifted, how we work together as a team, and also how we could better organize and clarify our responsibilities. In the section below, you can read a summarized version of our staff’s ministry responsibilities.  While the main responsibilities of each…

Defining Discipleship

We talk about making disciples, but do we know how to do it?  In this series of lessons on Personal Discipleship, let’s pray that we start obeying the biblical mandate regarding discipleship. Before we can make a disciple, we need to figure out what one looks like. Download Handout – PD 01 – Defining Discipleship What Is a Disciple? Definition In its simplest form, “disciple” means “learner.” “Disciple” was not a unique spiritual term during Jesus’ day.  It was used to…
