What is the book of Leviticus about?

Over the next few weeks we will be reading through the book of Leviticus for our Bible Reading Plan.  Below are a couple of video resources from The Bible Project to help you understand this important book.  The two videos together last about 15 minutes, and hopefully they will help you understand the truths that God wanted to communicate to the Israelites and to us.  You can check out more videos on books and themes of the Bible from The…

The Grace of God

The grace of God is foundational for our salvation and our sanctification.  Without the grace of God, we have no basis for a relationship with Him. Incorrect Perception: The Chutes and Ladders God Chutes and Ladders is a game that seeks to defeat your opponents by being the first to reach the top square of the board.  You move higher by climbing ladders when you perform good deeds, but you slide lower on the chutes when you break rules.  Any…

Bible Reading Plan for Week on November 4

Last week we started the book of Leviticus, and we will continue reading through it this week.  Leviticus contains a great deal of law presented in historical format.  In the book of Leviticus God gives instruction for how His people should worship Him and obey Him.  As you read through Leviticus, examine your own worship and obedience to the Lord.  On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll focus on the Scriptures for our Gospel Groups and the Sunday sermon.  Please consider the…

As We Gather November 4th 2018

Sunday November 4th 2018 Scripture: Psalm 67:3-5 English Standard Version (ESV) 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Selah 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! As we prepare for worship this week meditate on Psalm 67:3-5 Here is a link to the songs…

Can You Pray Too Long?

One of the main reasons people are intimidated to pray in public is due to a misunderstanding of prayer rhetoric.  While we claim to believe that all prayers are equal, we tend to establish a hierarchy of prayers due to the level of impressive, spiritual vocabulary utilized. Statements like these prove the point: “Man, that person sure knows how to pray.” “That prayer was really Spirit-filled.” “There’s no way I could pray like that!” While there can be some truths…

Bible Reading Plan for Week of Sunday, October 28

This week we will finish up the book of Exodus and start the book of Leviticus.  God is working through His chosen people to accomplish His purposes.  He is still working today and accomplishing His purposes.  On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll focus on the Scriptures for our Gospel Groups and the Sunday sermon.  Please consider the questions below regarding the Scriptures for our Gospel Groups. Sunday, October 28 – Mark 8:27-33 Monday, October 29 – Exodus 30-32 Tuesday, October 30…

As We Gather

Sunday October 28th 2018 Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:26-29 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 27Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. 28Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! 29Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; As we prepare…

Prisoner of Your Own Appetite

I often hear people talk about how their lives are so full of pain and drama.  Sometimes those people can’t help – certain things have been done to them.  In other cases, it is the own person’s fault. Sometimes, we can’t blame God, the Devil, or other people for our situation – it’s our fault. I read this illustration years ago in Joshua Harris’ book, Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is). Thomas Costain’s history, The Three Edwards, described the…

He Just Needed Jesus

Hear how Jesus is changing this family. Years of praying. A co-worker’s invitation. Jesus is still in the business of changing lives.  This is Dusty and Owen’s story of receiving the gospel.

The Immutability of God

In a world that is constantly changing, is there anything that remains consistent?  How are we to view God in a rapidly shifting world? Incorrect Perception: The Upgraded God We live in a world of constant updates and revisions.  The groundbreaking technological gadget is obsolete in mere months due to ever-changing upgrades.  What once seemed sufficient becomes obsolete quickly.  Books require revisions, software require updates, devices require enhancements, homes require renovations, and standards require revisions.  We live in a world…

Bible Reading Plan for Week of October 21

God has heard the cries of His people and He has rescued them from Egyptian slavery.  He has shown His power and grace through the 10 plagues and the crossing of the Red Sea.  Now God will continue to show His power and grace as the Israelites travel through the wilderness to come to the Promised Land.  As you continue reading in Exodus, think about God’s power and grace that have been demonstrated in your own life.  On Saturday and…

As We Gather – Sunday October 21st 2018

Sunday October 21st 2018 Scripture: 1 John 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. As you prepare for our Sunday gathering take time to pray for leadership and the others who will be involved in the service. This week is special in that we will be taking communion together and observing  baptism in both services. Click here to listen to the songs we…

7 Reasons Your Bible Reading Is Inconsistent

For many years, Christians have called time in the Word and prayer a quiet time. While Christians talk about the importance of a quiet time, it is rare to hear people articulate how someone trained them to do a quiet time. I don’t have a perfect recipe, and I am by far not a perfect example, but I do feel the responsibility to share what I have learned along the way (Col. 1:28-29).  If Scripture teaches us to train ourselves…

The Omnipresence of God

The omnipresence of God means that God is everywhere at the same time.  While such an infinite concept is difficult for finite minds to comprehend, is it true?  How does that change our perception of God? Incorrect Perception: The Overbooked God Have you ever tried to get an appointment with that really busy person?  You keep trying to get on the calendar, but you can never get him or her to settle in on a time.  Like the doctor that…

Bible Reading Plan for Week of October 14

The second book of Moses and the second book in the Bible is Exodus.  The dominant history recorded in the book is the departure of Israel from Egypt.  Moses leads God’s people, and many important events in the history of Israel are chronicled in the book of Exodus.  As you read this week, meditate on God’s presence, protection, and provision.  See the foreshadowing of Christ our Passover (1 Corinthians 5:7) in the readings this week.  On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll…

As We Gather Sunday October 14th 2018

Scripture: 1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect Is the hope you profess with your lips written in your life? Can people see the Lordship of Christ in your heart? As you prepare for our worship gathering this Sunday take a moment and ask God,…

Rocky Creek Gave Over and Beyond

In order to keep the quality what we believed it should be in phases 1 & 3 of renovations, and to collect an initial commitment to phase 4, we asked the church body to pray about giving a onetime Over and Beyond Offering on Sunday, Sept. 30th.  For those in attendance on Sunday, you already heard the exciting news, but we wanted to make sure all members were aware of what God did through our church this past week. In…

Why a Man Fails to Finish Well

Many men start strong but fail to finish well.   Every person has stories of those men who became derailed overtime.  In losing their integrity, their family, or their commitments, many of them have no one to blame for the crash other than themselves for walking dangerously upon the tracks. Why do men fail to finish well?  The graphic story of King Rehoboam’s derailing in 1 Kings 12 shows common threads in the stories of many men.  He was the…
