The 5 Solas [Simplified]

The Protestant Reformation was a major 16th century European movement aimed initially at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.  This movement literally changed the world.  This year, we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation’s birth when Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses on the Castle Church in Wittenberg. As a result of the Protestant Reformation, Protestant denominations were born (Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, etc.).  Much of the doctrine that is accepted by evangelical Christians was reinstated during that time…

Interpreting the Gospels

As we approach the New Testament, the first hermeneutical task is to learn how to study the Gospels.  The Gospels are the accounts written to portray the person and work of Jesus Christ. The four Gospels all tell the same story but from different perspectives and to different audiences. Download Handout – Session 9 – Interpreting the Gospels How Were the Gospels Composed? The Gospels are books about Jesus but not by Jesus. The Gospels contain narrative portions as well as…

The Word Reading Plan [Week 11]

The Word Bible reading plan is a chronological 100-day guide that focuses on 50 pivotal Old Testament readings and 50 pivotal New Testament readings.  As we go through “The Word” series, our Sunday sermons will focus on the passage for that day.  During the week, our church will be reading through the rest of the passages to gain a fuller understanding of the grand narrative of Scripture. In addition, we have a Bible study for adults and students on Wednesdays…

Interpreting the Prophets

Interpreting the Old Testament prophets is an important hermeneutics’ skill. While the prophets are historical literature, they are more like sermons commenting on the events than detailed reporting of the events. Download Handout – Session 8 – Interpreting the Prophets The Prophets’ Contents Most of the prophets’ messages focused on current disobedience and consequential impending judgment. Only a small percentage of Old Testament prophecy foretells future events. Instead of providing new commands, the prophets warned about disobedience to the old commands.…

Interpreting the Writings

The Writings section of the Old Testament is also referred to as the Wisdom Literature.  These books don’t fit naturally into the Law, History, or Prophets categories.  While these books are different, they each artistically teach the wisdom in keeping God’s Law. In light of what is recorded in the Old Testament narratives, prescribed in the Law, reminded by the prophets, will God’s people be able to make wise decisions in life? Download Handout – Session 7 – Interpreting the Writings…

The Bible in 271 Words

We are at Day 51 of our 100-Day Word Bible reading plan!  As we begin through the New Testament, I thought it would be wise to remember where we have been and what we are anticipating.  In the second sermon of this series, I preached a summary of the scriptural narrative to help give us context to what we were studying. I have preached through the narrative of the Bible in different ways in the past.  For “The Word” series…

Interpreting the Law

In our study of Hermeneutics, we come to one of the most difficult sections of Scripture to interpret – the Law. Oftentimes, New Testament believers go too far in relation to the Law – either by expressing strict obedience to all types or by ignoring the commandments altogether as not applying to us.  We must find a healthy balance when it comes to interpreting this wonderful section of Scripture. Download Handout – Session 6 – Interpreting the Law Facts Pertaining to…
